We are seeking preferably a couple who are traveling farm sitting with sound beef cattle, rotational grazing management skills, to look after the family farm while my wife and I travel to visit family and friends for a break. We have been in drought the last 4 years and we are getting a bit better season now to allow us to get away. The time period is early January to mid February 2021. My elderly parents will remain on the farm to assist with questions and a changeover period would occur before we leave.
The person/couple managing the farm would need to have the ability to ride a quad bike with safety helmet (self supplied) on a daily basis, moving 2-3 mobs of 50-70 head of cattle daily with electric fencing (much like dairy farming) and inspect fences for electric shorts, oversee an additional 140 cow herd (in 4 mobs) with calves at foot every other day. This would take up approximately 2 hours at a leisurely pace comfortably each day. We would also appreciate it if some fencing could be done whilst we were away, even just running repairs. Other than that during the period required some irrigation of pastures maybe needed on weekends using Kline pods, bike lateral sprays, and a pivot irrigator. This may involve an additional couple of hours in the day to achieve a couple of changes of water.
There is a small two bedroom cottage on the farm that is available to stay in at no charge and lots of vegetables and fruit from my parents garden on offer. We are situated just 25 minutes west of Bairnsdale and 45 minutes from Lakes Entrance. It is the prime season for holidaying and fishing in the area. Just and hour from the high country, 3 hours from Mt Hotham and 3 hours from Melbourne. 4wd tracks all around and abundance of gold mining history on our doorstep.
This short term “help us have a holiday” position could be a regular occurrence for those wanting it, if the right couple is found. This would suit a retired farming family couple currently on the road with their caravan (room to park up) wanting peace and quiet. The first week may require you stay in your caravan or we can find alternative short term accommodation as the cottage is a holiday let and is booked usually over Christmas period. There are no time limits to get jobs done, just good relaxed farming living.
This position was offered for mid year 2020 but was cancelled due to Covid 19. Those that were keen then are encouraged to reapply. There have been only 2 or 3 known outbreaks in the entire East Gippsland region for Covid 19 during the entire pandemic period. As part of accepting this volunteer position you will need to adhere to all Covid 19 rules by law and manage social distancing with my elderly parents. We will need to know of your travel locations in the 14 days lead up to arriving on farm.
An online video hook up type interview will be needed during the selection process.
Those with an ABN and specific farming/trade skills may be offered some cash payment as well as the accommodation for extra work done.
