I know this is a long shot considering it’s a mammoth job and in a rather remote area.
The 2 bedroom cottage I live in on my parents cattle stations is in desperate need of repair maintenance before it’s too late. I am a 35 year old single mum who works for her elderly and unwell parents. I also teach my son through school of distance education. I also take outside contract jobs when they are available to try and generate some much needed income to pay for stock feed. My son comes with me as I still have to teach him school whilst working.
My cottage is very old and has been rather neglected over the years. My son and I have to share a bedroom as the other room is used as his school room. The kitchen doesn’t function, windows don’t close, entry doors are hanging by a thread, half of the lights don’t work, the plumbing is a full time job of repairing the leaks, to use the toilet you have to turn the main water pipe on and off to flush. I do what I can when I can to keep it from completely falling down around our ears. However I have a major back injury which has rendered me useless many times. I am trying to raise the almost $10 000 needed to have an operation which would see me be able to do more on the stations.
It’s really depressing coming back after a long day saving drought stock to a cottage that is run down and does not have the basics – like a usable kitchen.
My son is 9 years old and he still hasn’t experienced a true wet season – he only knows the tough times.
I appreciate the fact my request is asking a lot, but it’s my last shot. It will take many consecutive good wet years before the renovations to my cottage would make it into the station’s budget.
